On March 7, 1834, a six mile area became known as Canton. Canton, like many surrounding areas, were named after cities in China due in part to the enhanced trade relations the united States had with china at the time. Additionally, Washington had decreed that all new townships had to use names that weren't previously used by another post office. Today Canton is the only township that uses its original name.
In 1961 the population climbed to 5,300 and Canton became a Charter Township. Canton, as one of the fastest growing communities, has over 70,000 residents.
It is a sought after area to live in because of its school system and the ranking as one of the "safest communities in America". Canton is served by three school districts, which include Plymouth-Canton, Wayne-Westland and Van Buren. In addition to the highly regarded public education system, Canton is home to a number of private institutions as well.
The community hosts many organized events throughout the year structured towards families. The center of the community is Summit on the Park. This facility is the host of many unique recreational activities.
